Telemann’s Fantasies

In his day, Telemann (1661-1767) was considered to be on a par with Bach and Handel. He was a  survivor of tragedy, a prolific composer, a traveller and a pioneer of music printing techniques and composer’s rights. His output is cosmopolitan, innovative, interesting and varied – the Fantasies draw on styles of other nations, vocal arias, polyphony and even the sound of a full orchestra. Wonderful music!

The 12 Fantasies for solo flute are a wonderful demonstration of what the baroque flute could do on a technical and emotional level. They include styles of other nations, vocal arias, polyphony and even the sound of a full orchestra! This is fascinating, beautiful and forward-looking music!
